Rendered in layers rather that one full piece. Lots of matte painting techniques used. Lots of photographic stuff used for little touches. Comments pleeeez. EDIT: Wow 130 comments and 160 totally unpredicted favs larer and i'd like to answer a couple of key Qs. 1) I work for Games Workshop HQ and was commissioned to make an Ultramarines ship so that's my reason for the chaper (I know very little about 40K) 2) Sorry about the lens flare people. I shall have to release the full double size version without lenseflare and with less smoke for the fans. Love you all! Daily DeviationGiven 2004-06-29The work put into this image needs to be seen to be believed, Space Marine Strike Cruiser by ~digital-fluids is a remarkable render and design. Pierdu pierdu. Somebody set up us the bomb!!
The little bits of rust on the cruiser look fantastic, as do the various other facets of it such as the flag/emblem, guns, engines, rockets, et cetera. The detail in the rest of the picture is quite good as well, especially the waves around the edges of the land (a very nice addition). The clouds in the background look good as well.
However, there are a few areas that could be improved. See below:
The "Space Marine Strike Cruiser" does not fit in with the rest of the picture. It has a different texture, or feel, than the background. While the background looks three dimensional, the cruiser looks like a two-dimensional drawing that is trying to be three-dimensional. (It's hard to explain.) It doesn't detract from the overall quality of the picture much, but it was something that I noticed.
The dust clouds/whatever in the foreground seem completely unnecessary to me. Unless they were placed in the picture to disguise the above point (which they did not do very successfully) I see no reason whatsoever to have the dust clouds in the picture. They block the towers/buildings in the background on the left, the boats/ships/whatever on the sea and in the sky, and the tiny landmarks in the background on the right. I think the picture would be much better if these dust clouds were removed, but that's just my opinion. Is there a particular reason why you included them?
The photo flare/glare/whatever it's called from the sun, while adding to the "apparent realism" takes away from the quality of the picture, in my opinion. I don't think it is necessarily a problem with the picture, but more a matter of personal preference.
There is almost always a common factor that ties all the science fiction pictures I look at together. A planet in the background. From what I've seen, most artists prefer to make the planet as big as they possibly can while still leaving a bit of sky in the picture. In this picture, you made the planet smaller than the average. The dust clouds block out almost a quarter of it, so it is not imposing like some other science fiction pictures I have seen. Once again it is a matter of personal preference, but I don't like to see a planet in the picture, especially when the sun is right next to it. However, I like seeing planets like this much more than the huge planets I see in other pictures. (I hope that was easy enough to follow).
The water does not look very realistic. I don't know how it could be improved, though. This is only a minor quibble of the picture, and since the audience shouldn't be focusing on the water but the "Space Marine Strike Cruiser" and the city in the background, there is no real problem. (Just me nitpicking at everything.)
The detail in the background such as the city and the landmarks on the right are being masked by the dust clouds. I find this disappointing because once I had finished looking at the "Space Marine Strike Cruiser" I wanted to have a close look at the environment that the cruiser is currently in. While some parts of the city are clearly visible, it's a shame that all of it isn't. I'm interested to know what the landmarks on the right are supposed to be?
The ships flying around in the background and sailing/hovering over the water are a nice touch, but it would be nice to see more of them. Once again, though, this is just my personal preference.
I'm undecided on the somewhat sepia tone to the picture. Did you make the picture so it was sepia, or are the colours actually supposed to be like they are in the picture?
In summary, this is an excellent picture. There are a few problems with it, in my opinion, but these are only very minor and should not overshadow the great parts of the picture. Also, congratulations on the daily deviation, it was well deserved.
I hope my comments were easy to follow and understand, my apologies if they weren't.
One last question: Is the "Space Marine Strike Cruiser" something from Warhammer? I don't play it, but the name sounds familiar.

going to let dev art be the decider: is it shit or not.
A few other people had given slighly less praise than I had hoped for too so was very unsure of myself here. Coz i like it....but one never knows do they.
